Hijama Cupping has returned to Bankstown Health with Dr Michelle Lam TCM.
Hijama Cupping is another popular therapy included in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Cupping involves a qualified therapist placing special cups in strategic places on your skin to create suction. The cups can be made of glass, bamboo or silicone. Cupping is used to treat many things including:
- pain relief
- inflammation
- blood flow
- relaxation
- and more.
A therapist will typically place 4-6 cups on your body, but for first timers they will usually only place 1-2 cups. Starting off slowly will help you get used to the sensation, while still promoting healing. Hijama cups are usually left on the body for around 2-3 minutes and in some cases, the practitioner will also insert acupuncture needles to compliment the cupping therapy.
While cupping is gaining in popularity today, this form of therapy has actually been around for centuries. Studies have found that cupping dates back as early as 1,550 B.C!
Hijama cupping can be done in many forms, the most popular being Dry or Wet.
Dry Cupping Therapy is an ancient treatment that employs the localised use of negative pressure, creating a vacuum to promote healing. Dry cupping uses controlled suction to open up muscle tissue and vastly increases local circulation of blood and fluids.
Wet Cupping creates a mild suction by leaving a cup in place for about 3 minutes. The therapist then removes the cup and uses a small scalpel to make light incisions on your skin. Next, she does a second suction to draw out a small quantity of blood.
