Sciatic Nerve Pain. What to do?
As you probably already know Sciatic nerve pain can be very difficult to deal with. In clinic Sciatic pain (Sciatica) is a very common reason for a patient to seek treatment. There are however some really simple ways to make sciatic pain go away and it really doesn’t have to be a life changing experience.
The most common cause of sciatic pain is compression of the sciatic nerve in the low back. The term pinched nerve is a simple way to view it, except it can be inflamed, impinged or compressed from a variety of structures. Understanding the mechanism behind why it is “pinched” is the key to effective management. it could be due to pressure, due to bleeding or swelling, it could be because the spine is “stiff or caught” and keeping it locked in a position causing the compression.
There are also other reasons why you may be experiencing sciatic pain and they may not be from your spine. Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle pinches the sciatic nerve along its path through the pelvis.
Understanding your mechanism of injury is the difference between effective treatment and more pain. Usually once the underlying causes are understood and the mechanism for injury is managed people respond exceptionally well to care.
You see many complaints of sciatica may not actually be sciatica. I see so often people describing the pain as sciatic, however the really do not have any sciatic nerve symptoms. This is definitely not their fault, in fact I see sciatica commonly misdiagnosed by a whole range of health professionals including GP’s.
There are a few simple things that can also present like sciatica which can be managed quickly with Osteopathy or Chiropractic. For example sacroiliac joint pain often masquerades as sciatica and this can also be managed effectively. Sometimes i’ve seen people with knee Osteoarthritis being told they have Sciatica. YES – something not even closely related.
So the key to getting rid of sciatic pain is to see a therapist who looks at ruling out other complaints and truly understands how the body’s structure impacts its function.
It’s like this. Sciatic pain is like a puzzle, and sometimes therapists look at one piece. “It’s your disc”, “you have weak core muscles”, “take medication and it will go away”, “you have a tight back”, or “stretch”.
What we do different is try to incorporate all the pieces together and accurately understand where the complaint is coming from, whilst giving you advice and treatment on lots of pieces.
That’s why we are different. That’s why we want to show you how it actually works.
