Exercise Physiology may be the missing key you are looking for. Doctors will recommend exercise when you have a condition but a lot of the time are not specific about what type of exercise you need. A lot of people will start doing Cardio, as that is usually the first type of exercise that comes to mind, however your body needs more than just Cardio to support itself. Core, for example is extremely important to support your back and whole body. If you are someone who suffers from back strain, you may be lacking in core strength.
What is an Exercise Physiologist?
An Exercise Physiologist is a Health professional that asses your current level of fitness, as well as your condition. They are then able to create an exercise plan that is tailored to helping you manage your condition and get the most out of life. The benefit of seeing an Exercise Physio over a Personal Trainer is that they will be able to understand your condition from a medical point of view and support you in ways a personal trainer may not be trained in. You can of course switch to a personal trainer later on down the track and check in with your Exercise Physio every now and then. An Exercise Physiologist also works with your GP to ensure you get the best care plan that meets your individual needs.
An initial consult with your Exercise Physiologist can take up to an hour. During this consult your Exercise Physio will assess your current fitness level and talk about your condition. They will then start you with some exercises that are both low impact and match your fitness level. Sometimes these exercises can be done at home and they will give you homework to do these exercises in between visits. As your fitness level grows, the exercise plan will evolve to match. During your initial consult, you will set a goal of where you want to be, whether that be pain free, stronger, more flexible etc. The treatment plan designed by your Exercise Physio will ensure you get where you want to be, safely.
